Zeng Yuxuan, Student Who Planned to Display Tiananmen Poster, Missing for Six Months
HRIC urgently calls on the Chinese authorities to provide information on the situation of Zeng Yuxuan, a former law student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong who has been missing for six months, since October 12, 2023. Last year, she served a six-month sentence in Hong Kong for planning to display posters with the image of the “Pillar of Shame,” an art piece by Danish sculptor Jens Galschiøt, to commemorate June Fourth. Zeng obtained the posters from HRIC Executive Director Zhou Fengsuo, but was arrested before she was able to carry out any commemoration activities.
Zeng Yuxuan supported freedom for Hong Kong, and participated in the White Paper protests there. While in prison, Zeng remained optimistic and interested in international affairs. But at the conclusion of her sentence, instead of being released, she was repatriated back to mainland China and has not been heard from since. Given the Chinese authorities’ history of “disappearing” and mistreating human rights defenders and outspoken activists, we are deeply concerned about her mental and emotional wellbeing. We implore the international community to take an interest in her case, and urge the Chinese authorities to disclose her whereabouts and status immediately.
Zeng Yuxuan, we will never forget you!
