Liu Xia, well-known Chinese activist and wife of Nobel Peace Prize Winner Liu Xiaobo, recently visited New York. HRIC Executive Director Zhou Fengsuo gave Liu Xia a personal tour of the memorials that HRIC and Humanitarian China have created for her late husband.
First, Liu Xia visited Liu Xiaobo's memorial bench in Central Park, carrying flowers, a picture, and a note to commemorate him. Liu Xia said that when she first came to Central Park five years ago, she saw a bench with someone's name on it and hoped in her heart that there would be a bench dedicated to Liu Xiaobo. However, she also knew that due to the pervasive influence of the CCP regime, Liu Xiaobo is a sensitive topic around the world, and felt that there was little hope. She was deeply gratified to see that Humanitarian China had made her longstanding dream come true by setting up a memorial bench in Central Park.
Standing in front of the bench, she thought: “big dummy, little dummy has come to see you.” She missed Liu Xiaobo’s voice and smile from when they were in Beijing; when he was young, he was thin and had long hair. Before she left, she placed flowers and a message for Liu Xiaobo on the bench: "Dear Bobo: I give you my endless love."
Afterwards, Zhou Fengsuo brought Liu Xia to the June 4th Memorial Museum to see the large-scale portrait of Liu Xiaobo produced by Human Rights in China, and view the happy birthday letter Liu Xiaobo wrote to Wang Dan, who was in prison at the time, in one of the exhibits.
During her stay in New York, Liu Xia mainly visited various art museums. There were no public activities, which provided her with a rare opportunity for her to relax and recuperate.
