HRIC Condemns Harsh Sentences for the "47 Democrats"
Human Rights in China strongly condemns the Hong Kong courts for sentencing 45 pro-democracy figures to prison for up to 10 years on charges of “subversion of state power.” The defendants include former lawmakers, activists, and grassroots community leaders who were targeted simply for participating in peaceful political activities and exercising their basic democratic rights. This sentencing is part of a systematic crackdown on freedom of expression, the right to assembly, and political participation.
The verdict reflects the fact that since the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law, the judiciary has been transformed into a tool to suppress dissidents, completely deviating from the international community’s basic principles of a fair trial and human rights. The law has forced many activists, lawyers and ordinary citizens into silence or exile.
We call on the Hong Kong government to immediately release all those detained for peaceful political activities and drop all charges related to democratic activities. The international community must pay close attention to the human rights situation in Hong Kong, stand with the persecuted, and defend the universal values of democracy and freedom.
